Mixtec Culture Week
In 2001, the first annual Mixtec Culture Week was organized which had the goal of increasing awareness and spreading Mixtec culture. From that year on, the event has taken place annually, and the eighth festival was held from May 25th to 30th of 2008.
Given that the goal is to give awareness and spread Mixtec culture, every year demonstrations of dance, music, video, lectures, expositions and art are given.
Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero all participate in trying to highlight above all the Mixtec culture in every one of them.
The Universidad Tecnologica de la Mixteca organizes the Mixtec Culture Week, and the events take place on the campus. In these, lectures, artistic and artesian expositions, musical and dance events take place, all geared around the region and the Mixtec culture.
Throughout the eight times that the Mixtec Culture Week has taken place, it has been one of the clearest and most representative forums for demonstrating the diverse artistry of the Mixtec culture in Oaxaca, bringing together artists from different areas, among which painters, sculptures, musicians, dancers, researchers, singers, actors, and various other artists and artisans. The full range of experts in the expression of Mixtec culture, have been able to gather and demonstrate their art together in an open forum. This has facilitated the diffusion of these demonstrations and at the same time has allowed the recording of them in materials such as books which have been published every year of the Mixtec Culture Week.
In 2009, the ninth Mixtec Culture Week will take place.
First Annual Mixtec Culture Week
The events of the first annual Mixtec Culture Week took place from Sunday, May 22nd to Friday, May 27th of 2001.
Second Annual Mixtec Culture Week
The Universidad Tecnologica de la Mixteca celebrated the second annual Mixtec Culture Week from the 2nd to the 7th of June, 2002, with the purpose of continuing the diffusion of the demonstrations and values that characterize the region.
Third Annual Mixtec Culture Week
From the 1st through the 6th of June of 2003 was the start of the third annual Mixtec Culture Week on the UTM campus where the Mixteca of Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero participated.
The celebration of this festival corresponds to one of the fundamental principles of UTM, which is the diffusion of culture. Every year there is a need to present events of even higher quality which are a sign of the interest in recognizing the values of the culture that the Mixtec represents.
Fourth Annual Mixtec Culture Week
From the 30th of May to the 4th of June of 2004, the fourth annual Mixtec Culture Week took place with the object of spreading the expression and values of culture itself, with the presence of the states of Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero.
Fifth Annual Mixtec Culture Week
From the 29th of May to the 3rd of June of 2005, on the campus of UTM there were demonstrations of culture, among which were expositions of visual arts, earthenware and palm from the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Also, lectures, books and videos were presented.
Sixth Annual Mixtec Culture Week
The sixth annual Mixtec Culture Week was celebrated at UTM highlighting the flavor of the culture with representations of dances of the Mixtec race, such as the Jarabe Mixteco.
Seventh Annual Mixtec Culture Week
The seventh annual Mixtec Culture Week was celebrated from the 27th of May to the first of June, 2007 on the campus of UTM. Mixtec from Oaxaca, Puebla and Guerrero participated
Eighth Annual Mixtec Culture Week
UTM organized the eighth annual Mixtec Culture Week from the 25th to the 30th of May, 2008 with the objective of maintaining the cultural expressions of our state.
This week has the goal of being a meeting place between the university community, young students, and residents of the region with distinguished representatives of art and research. Being the main players, artisans, photographers, musicians, writers, and researchers tackle the aspects of the language, culture, science, history, customs and development of the Mixtec world.
